Brembo notes that new pads are often approximately 10 to 12 mm thick and that below about 3 mm it is time for replacement. Exact thresholds and measurement methods still depend on the vehicle and brake system.

Other warning signs
- Metallic or unusual brake noise
- Brake wear warning light
- Vibration or pulsation while braking
- Abnormal pedal feel
- Longer stopping distance
Rotors matter too
Rotors wear as well. Their minimum thickness is specific to the part and vehicle. A proper inspection considers pads, rotors, calipers, hoses, fluid and other system components.
Do not diagnose from a chart alone. These values are educational references. Have the actual brake system measured for a vehicle-specific recommendation.
